Anthony Waichulis (b. 1972) hails from rural Pennsylvania and has established a national reputation for his trompe l'oeil paintings. Waichulis came to our attention through the auspices of gallery stalwart Will Wilson, a one-time instructor at the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore, MD of which they are both alumni. In addition to John Pence Gallery, Waichulis has exhibited at The Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, OH; the Arnot Art Museum, Elmira, NY; The Washington Museum of Fine Arts, Hagerstown, MD; Midwest Museum of American Art, Elkhart, IN; and the Johns Hopkins University, Evergreen House, Baltimore, MD.

The brilliant dimensionality he achieves is on par with the two most prominent American trompe l'oeil artists, John Peto and William Harnett. Beyond mere technical precision, Waichulis' paintings are compelling, and convey a sense of humor and original point of view. Upon careful inspection, the viewer begins to make a connection between the seemingly unrelated objects depicted. This clever use of narrative only adds to the allure of his work. Many references are culled for inspiration: popular culture, classic literature, and childhood memories, to name a few.
